Democracy Under Attack – A Discussion on the Human Rights in the Philippines
Thursday, 25 October 2018 – 4:00-6:00 p.m. Room EA.G.33, Parramatta South Campus, Western Sydney University, Sydney
(For detailed directions please check Movement Against Tyranny Australia FB Page)
The Movement Against Tyranny-Australia (MAT) presents a timely discussion on the human rights situation in the Philippines, with a roundtable session held at Western Sydney University (WSU). Discussion will be led by former Head of Law School at the Macquarie University Professor Gill Boehringer, Chairperson of the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) Peter Murphy, and international student from the University of New South Wales Charm Sing.
Human rights are inalienable and yet, the Duterte regime violates these intrinsic rights with impunity. With the staggering 13,000 cases of extrajudicial killings and the recent instances of red-tagging in universities that essentially curtail people’s rights to free expression and speech, it is important to generate conversations around the relationship between human rights advocacy in the local and international spheres. Through this focused conversation, the discussants will share data, stories, and analyses on the human rights situation under the current regime in the Philippines and how these correlate to international human rights advocacy.
