Against Our Oath

The ethical conflicts for doctors working with refugees and asylum seekers

FILEF invites you to a screening of a documentary feature film on doctors working with asylum seekers who arrived in Australia by boat and are de- tained on the remote Pacific islands of Manus and Nauru. Ethical conflicts erupt as the Australian government overrides the clinical decisions made for refugee patients. If doctors cannot follow their medical ethics what will happen to their patients?

Filmed over four years by journalist, Heather Kirkpatrick, 2013 Walkley Award finalist and the winner of a 2014 United Nations Media Peace Prize.

This documentary gets behind the hospital doors to hear from clinicians themselves, who face enormous political pressure, as they cannot always act in their patient’s best interest. Doctors become morally torn as they know they must never abandon their patients and the ethics upon which their medical profession was founded.

Speakers

Dr Elisabeth Biok, phd, Solicitor at the Legal aid Commission, expert on refugee Law in the asia pacific region will give a brief introduction to the current situation, how limiting it is, the government’s refusal to consider positive amendments to the legislation.

Dr. Anne Noonan (MD rome), member of the Medical association for the prevention of War (MapW), psychiatrist, works in remote communities in Central australia.

Q&A will follow. –

Kashmir Resistance

Thursday, 28th November, 2019, Leichhardt Library, Norton St.

Flyer: Kashmir Resistance
Thursay 28th November, 2019
Leichhardt Library, Norton Street.

FILEF and Stand With Kashmir invite you to an information evening about the human rights situation in Kashmir. On 5 August India extended absolute control over Kashmir.
The Modi government imposed a curfew and a communications blackout and sent in more troops. No foreign journalists are allowed to visit Kashmir.

In 1947 the people of Kashmir were promised they could determine their own future. India committed to holding a plebiscite to achieve this and this was backed up by a UN resolution. That promise has never been honoured. This is the most militarised region in the world with one million Indian troops in Kashmir and Jammu. The potential for conflict is massive – both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers.

Stand With Kashmir is working to build global support for their campaign for self-determination.

Speakers

Anjum Rafiqi, is from Kashmir, he now lives in Sydney and is spokesperson and one of the key organisers of Stand With Kashmir in Australia, working to build global support for their campaign to stop human rights abuses in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Lee Rhiannon, former Green Senator, visited Kashmir in 2018 and since leaving parliament has worked closely with the Kashmir community to achieve their demand for self-determination.

The West Papuan People have been calling since then for independence and are still protesting, risking arrest, torture and their own life.

The evening was presented by:
Joe Collins, secretary of the Australia West Papua Association, and
Sister Susan Connelly of the Order of St. Joseph introduced the issue and gave an update.

The very informative documentary Land of the Morning Star was also screened, and those who could not attend will be able to see it on YouTube at the following link:

Democracy Under Attack – A Discussion on the Human Rights in the Philippines

Democracy Under Attack – A Discussion on the Human Rights in the Philippines

Thursday, 25 October 2018 – 4:00-6:00 p.m. Room EA.G.33, Parramatta South Campus, Western Sydney University, Sydney

(For detailed directions please check Movement Against Tyranny Australia FB Page)

The Movement Against Tyranny-Australia (MAT) presents a timely discussion on the human rights situation in the Philippines, with a roundtable session held at Western Sydney University (WSU). Discussion will be led by former Head of Law School at the Macquarie University Professor Gill Boehringer, Chairperson of the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) Peter Murphy, and international student from the University of New South Wales Charm Sing.

Human rights are inalienable and yet, the Duterte regime violates these intrinsic rights with impunity. With the staggering 13,000 cases of extrajudicial killings and the recent instances of red-tagging in universities that essentially curtail people’s rights to free expression and speech, it is important to generate conversations around the relationship between human rights advocacy in the local and international spheres. Through this focused conversation, the discussants will share data, stories, and analyses on the human rights situation under the current regime in the Philippines and how these correlate to international human rights advocacy.
