Le cause dei pregiudizi e delle insofferenze verso gli stranieri hanno molte similitudini con le cause dei pregiudizi e delle insofferenze verso i poveri, particolarmente in tempi economicamente incerti e insicuri.
E’ chiaro che gli spazi per programmare la propria vita si restringono anche nei paesi industrializzati, che finora sembravano il modello vincente come sistema sociale e come stile di vita personale.
Questo restringimento è dovuto a cambiamenti dirompenti, di natura finanziaria e tecnologica, che hanno profonde conseguenze sociali e politiche. Il processo è sempre quello della ricerca del profitto, con l’accumulo di ricchezza da una parte e di indigenza dall’altra, ma è diventato molto più rapido e aggressivo.
Purtroppo il dibattito popolare si limita alle conseguenze, ai drammi e alle sofferenze di chi vede peggiorare le proprie condizioni, e al conflitto tra gli esclusi, in cui i penultimi attribuiscono agli ultimi (i migranti) le cause del peggioramento della propria condizione, in quanto entrambi cercano di accedere a spazi sempre più ristretti (lavoro, servizi, diritti, ecc..).
I populismi che si manifestano dapertutto sono anche la risposta alla rabbia e alla frustrazione di chi non riesce ad identificare le cause del peggioramento della propria condizione e le attribuisce a chi si trova in situazioni ancora peggiori, anzichè alle modalità con cui operano le forze economiche e ad una classe dirigente principalmente occupata a difendere il suo status privilegiato.
Populisms: The struggle between the battlers
The causes of prejudice and intolerance towards immigrants have many similarities with the causes of prejudice and of impatience towards the poor, particularly in economically uncertain and insecure times.
It is also clear that opportunity to plan one’s life is restricted in industrialized countries, which until now seemed the model social system and for personal lifestyles.
This tightening is due to disruptive changes, of a financial and technological nature, with their profound social and political consequences. The process, always driven by the profit motive, accumulates wealth on the one hand and poverty on the other. The difference is that this process today has become much more rapid and more aggressive.
Unfortunately, popular debate has been limited to the consequences, the dramas and suffering from worsening conditions, and the conflict between excluded sections of society. This results in the last in the socio-economic pecking order (the migrants) being blamed by those second to last in that order for the deterioration of their condition, as they vie for shrinking prospects (work, services, rights, etc.).
The populist response by those who are struggling is to direct their anger and frustration at those who are in even worse situations, rather than towards the economic forces influenced by a ruling class mainly occupied in defending its privileged status.
