More than 1.100.000 Australians today claim Italian ancestry. Almost seven decades after the beginning of mass migration of Italian families to Australia it is time to ask what cultural and linguistic elements of people’s Italian Regional origins remain resilient and identifiable in the first, second (and third) generations. The way we speak characterizes us as members of a specific community and reflects the environment in which we live and build our personal experiences. Our speech undergoes significant changes under the pressure of different social factors, and contact with multiple languages in immigrant communities.
Our project aims to study and document what remains, what has changed and what has been acquired in the languages and dialects used in Australian-Italian families, and how these contribute to their identity across generations.
