The SDN 2017 Festival of Democracy will feature three days of sessions covering:
Kidnapped democracy: how can the notion of the kidnapping of democracy help us imagine and formulate new ways of preventing dangerous concentrations of power? Are we all suffering from Stockholm syndrome?
The truth of post truth: how do ‘objective facts’, ‘fake news’, opinion, disagreement, knowledge, insult, the role of experts, conflict and public debate come together in the era of ‘post truth’?
Authoritarianism: the historical allusions of contemporary governments in the US, and in Europe, are driving all manner of comparisons with the 1930s in particular, and the rise of Nazism, Fascism, and Authoritarianism. What is the relevance of the past and these categories to today?
Broken news: our news is broken. It informs us most about the least important affairs in the world, while leaving us completely in the dark about the most fundamental developments that shape our lives and societies. New business models and digital tools won’t save journalism so what will?
Rethinking territory: do we need to ‘re-invent territory’ – and to imagine radically new institutional forms of representing our overlapping local attachments to the territories in which we dwell as we deal with global problems?
The origin and extinction of species: why should humans be concerned about the massive daily extinction of species? Can anything be done to slow down or reverse this unprecedented trend?
Join us for the Festival finale on Friday night for the launch of the Change Makers podcast telling the stories about what is working and not working in the world of social change, and two new books from SDN Associates Refiguring Democracy: the Spanish Political Laboratory and When Trees Fall, Monkeys Scatter.
