FILEF AND THE ITALIAN FORUM PRESENT: SOCCER UNITES!
Posted by admin on May 15th, 2010A MOVIE FILLED ANTIPASTO TO THE WORLD CUP FEAST
The coming World Cup is a real feast for all soccer fans, and what better “antipasto” than a festival of movies about “the most beautiful game in the world”, as it is called? From 8 to 11 June, when the Cup takes off, FILEF and the Italian Forum Cultural Centre, with the support of Leichhardt Council, present: Soccer Unites! The Cup Film Festival,
featuring seven films from around the world, looking at soccer and its impact on our society.
The selection includes the intense The Miracle of Bern, by German director Sonke Wortmann,
a poetic portrayal of football in the postwar period when an entire country, Germany, seeks to find itself through participation in the World Cup. Also not to be missed, Looking for Eric, by the great Ken Loach, an entertaining story and a reflection on the life we live. Its real protagonist is former French champion of Manchester United, Eric Cantona, who plays himself as he attempts to help a man going through a deep existential crisis. Very enjoyable also The Cup, by Tibetan director Khyentse Norbu, portraying the excitement and the joy of Tibetan monks living in an isolated temple, who stop at nothing to watch the 1998 World Cup of in France. Also included is the Australian short Bloody Footy by Dean Chircop, about an Italio-Australia father in Queensland who tries everything to convert to soccer his son, an Australian Rules fanatic. For lovers of Italian comedy, we present a classic, Il presidente del Borgorosso Football Club, with the exhilarating Alberto Sordi as the overambitious president of a provincial soccer team.
On the final day, 11 June at 4.00 pm, you are invited to the free seminar Soccer and Multiculturalism in Australia: from Wogs, Sheilas and Poofters to National Heroes, when prominent personalities of the Australian soccer community will discuss the role played by soccer in the multicultural Australia we live in.
All screenings, as well as the seminar, are held in the Italian Forum Cultural Centre on Norton Street, Leichhardt.
Tickets to screenings are $10 (pensioners and students $8). For further information, please contact the Italian Forum Cultural Centre at 02 9518 0077, or send an email to info@italianforum.com.au.
